About the operator

About

Boreal is an independent expedition operator, founded in 2013, running small-group aurora and astrophotography tours across the circumpolar north.

Boreal was founded in 2013 by a pair of astrophotographers who were tired of tour buses parking in front of their tripods at the exact moment the sky lit up.

Every departure is timed against the actual solar wind forecast, not a fixed calendar — we would rather move your trip by three days than stand under a quiet sky.

How we plan a trip

Five stages, timed to the sky.

01 · Forecast watch
We track KP-index and solar wind forecasts year-round before opening any booking window.
02 · Site selection
Each region has multiple fallback sites — cloud cover at one valley rarely means cloud cover at the next.
03 · Small groups
Trips cap at eight guests so nobody's headlamp ruins somebody else's fifteen-second exposure.
04 · Field instruction
Guides teach manual exposure and tracking on-site, on your own camera, not in a classroom beforehand.
05 · Flexible departure
We will move your trip by up to three days if the forecast says the display will be better later that week.
